Who says Italian is all about pastas? Their salads are both healthy and lip-smacking. Lollo Rosso, also known as Lollo Rossa, is a loose-leaf variety of lettuce. It has very curly, fan-shaped leaves with bright magenta edges. The leaves form a compact rosette when they grow 5- to 8-inches. This lettuce has a slightly bitter and nutty flavour, making it the perfect balance for sweeter lettuces or dressings.

How long does it take for Lollo Rosso to germinate?

Lollo Rosso Lettuce seeds usually sprout in about 7 to 14 days if the conditions are just right. Try to keep the soil temperature between 10°C and 22°C for the best results. When you're planting, sow the seeds about a quarter to half an inch deep in loose, well-draining soil. Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 — they’re pretty chill with that range. Since these seeds like a bit of light to get going, sprinkle them thinly and just barely cover them with soil. Keep the soil nicely moist, but not soggy — no one likes wet feet, not even lettuce!

How do you grow Lollo Rosso lettuce?

Lollo Rosso is a cool-season lettuce, best sown in early spring or late summer. Plant in moist, well-drained soil with 6–8 hours of sunlight (it can handle some shade too). How many hours of light do lettuce seeds need?

Lettuce seeds do best with 12 to 16 hours of light a day, especially when they’re just starting to sprout. If you’re growing them indoors, a grow light really helps — just make sure it’s close enough to the seedlings to be effective. Outdoors, pick a sunny spot, but if it’s hot where you live, partial shade can actually be a good thing to keep the plants from getting stressed.
